Fire in an Essex, Ontario mobile home recently lead to the tragic death of a father and two children. Speaking on the issue, the local fire departments said that no matter what sort of dwelling it is, smoke alarms can go a long way in saving lives. 

For the past two years, the Pembroke Fire Department has been trying to raise awareness about the crucial need for working smoke alarms in mobile homes at Fiddle Park. They stop every home entering the park and carry out a check for working smoke detectors before visitors are allowed to register in the park. Fire Chief Dan Herback said that the tradition was started by Rheaume Chaput, the previous fire chief and will be continued each year.

He said that there has been a noticeable improvement in the situation since they started the practice. Amongst other things, the firefighters also make sure that there are proper propane hook-ups otherwise they can be a danger to others in the park. 

During its busy weekends, Herback said that the mobile homes are so close to each other that it becomes difficult to check for possible fire hazards. In such a case, the fire staff checks while patrons are in line waiting to check in. Herback said that they try to get everything done prior to entry.

Herback stressed on the importance of smoke alarms and how volatile mobile homes can be once on fire. He emphasized the advantages of an early warning in the fight to save lives.
